Job description

The post-holder will be required to support Poppleton in implementing a novel
Digital Twin that will allow real time monitoring of the entire business process from
design to manufacturing to installation. This will involve developing new bespoke
software and connecting these to existing tools through the use of APIs. As part of
this project, an AI based approach for project estimation and management will be
developed to utilise the digital data driven workflow from the Digital Twin. In
developing this technological approach, you will also need to gain an
understanding of the current process including installation and construction
processes to ensure the software and Digital Twin is fit for purpose.
As part of the role you will draw on the expertise of both academic and company
supervisors throughout the KTP programme. You will be expected to take
responsibility for managing and delivering the programme of work which includes:
• Develop & integrate a novel DT process for the factory and site operations,
using initial digital design data and real time monitoring data
• Create and implement a standardised digital twin framework based on
analysis of existing technologies to support the development of DT
• Test and fully implement a holistic digital twin software platform for Poppleton
• Embed AI tools to support future project tendering and management.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1 Develop a deep understanding of Digital Twins and how these are implemented in the construction sector
2 Analyse existing hardware and software that could be used for a Digital Twin to support Poppleton workflows
3 Develop a new Digital Twin framework for Poppleton including how this will integrate with existing Quality Assurance processes
4 Develop new software tools and / or plugins to existing software tools to create digital twin for each stage of the Poppleton design, manufacturing and installation process
5 Ensure that all software development follows and is managed using an appropriate methodology
6 Develop an AI based toolkit to make use of historic Digital Twin data to support future estimating and management of projects
7 Report findings to the Company Management Team and other employees
8 Management of the KTP Programme, production of reports and relevant publications

Project description

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) are part funded by Innovate UK to support
business-university interactions in the UK. The successful candidate will be
employed by the University of Wolverhampton and will be based at E Poppleton and
Son Ltd in Colwyn Bay, North Wales, with time also spent using the digital
construction provision at the Wolverhampton City campus if necessary.
The purpose of this partnership with E Poppleton and Son is to develop a Unique
Digital Twin tool that will support the company in better managing the manufacture
and installation of ductwork in a range of construction environments.
The company has embraced Building Information Modelling (BIM) and is now
looking to further exploit advanced digital workflows, whilst actively making use of
digital data to improve the business. Looking forward, the company is excited to
make use of AI based tools to help them better manage projects and become
more competitive.
