This is a 30 month project between Loughborough University and Millitec Food Systems Limited. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with relevant skills to join the project team. Machine vision and deep learning based fast vision algorithms will be developed to recognise various food ingredients and accurately detect their location and any errors from image inputs.
The technology will empower a range of new automation functions on production conveyors at Millitec Food Systems Ltd. The innovative solution of the QA system will assure production quality to a high standard, thus to reduce waste, facilitate timely detection of errors, while improving overall production efficiency and optimisation.

The successful candidate will be a motivated individual ideally in possession of practical experience in computer vision, deep learning, image processing, robotics or related subjects. The candidate should have a PhD or MSc degree (or equivalent) with knowledge in these fields. Programming skills in C++/Python are essential. Experience in deep learning and embedded systems are desirable.

Job Purpose
• The KTP Associate will:
• Undertake a technical review based on user needs; identify gaps, challenges and opportunities

• Determine technical scope, objectives, specification and advancement

• Adapt state of the art machine vision and deep learning methods, and develop reliable real-time algorithms for food ingredient detection and quality assessment metrics for quality control on sandwich production lines

• Deploy vision and AI functions on an embedded system and test the function in factory settings

• Produce reports to senior management team

• Provide training materials/workshops to Millitec staff as necessary

• Contribute to academic research papers.

Project description

Machine vision for automated quality assurance system in food manufacturing industry

Food manufacturing is the largest manufacturing industry within the EU. Whilst in-process automation is now commonplace, the food manufacturing industry presents the high demand but the most challenging environment to operate intelligent automation. Millitec supplies hi-tech manufacturing machinery and a range of robotic products for food production automation industry.

The project is to develop an automated quality assurance (QA) monitoring system for real-time assessment of food processing quality. It is the first of its kind for controlling food production quality, through monitoring production lines (in particular sandwich conveyors) and providing quality assessment metrics in real time, using state of the art AI algorithms, computer vision and deep learning technologies.

Formed in 2005 and based in Derbyshire, Millitec Food Systems Ltd. is a world leader in the design and development of automation machines and robotic products for the food production industry. The company manufacture, sells and supports state-of-the-art hi-tech manufacturing machinery including mixers, ultrasonic cutters, depositors, butterers, sanitisers and production conveyors to suit food manufacturing industry. One of its first products, an ultrasonic sandwich cutter, represented a major leap forward in cutting technology. The technology is now used on hundreds of applications in companies around the world. In 2018, the company embarked on development of a bespoke fully IP69K-rated servo-driven robot for automatic handling of a range of ingredients on sandwich production lines. This proprietary technology will bring new levels of control, precision, speed, food manufacturing quality and safety to the industry.
