Project description

The challenge in this project is to develop an integrated forecasting platform that can significantly reduce waste in fresh tomato products by introducing data science, provide useful tools for decision support, and capability to plan demand and supply for new processed products transformed from remaining waste.

The new capabilities to be established at TTS will enable the company to have an effective and user-friendly forecasting platform that satisfies the company’s planning requirements and provides informed decision-making.

You will be joining a friendly team based on Isle of Wight. In the role, you will be actively supported by knowledge transfer specialists, with expertise in innovation, demand forecasting, waste reduction and manufacturing, from the University of Portsmouth.

About the business

Established in 2007, The Tomato Stall (TTS) has been growing a wide range of tomatoes organically and conventionally in the Arreton valley on the Isle of Wight. The high-quality and flavoursome produce is distributed across the country, including direct to the consumer, through farmer’s markets and major supermarkets, and supplying leading restaurants. Encouraged by customer feedback, TTS also began to experiment with making a range of award-winning tomato inspired products, from oak smoked tomato balsamic to sunshine juice. TTS is looking to develop new innovative products and flavour combinations that would ensure healthy long-term growth and sustainability.
