Sherlock HealthCare Services (SHS) and The School of Computing and Digital Technology at Birmingham City University (BCU) are looking to appoint a high calibre technical developer with specialist expertise around sensor driven systems. The role will be based in the Digital Media Technology (DMT) Lab at BCU, with a significant proportion of time also onsite at SHS (who specialise in providing high-quality residential care and support to young people with special needs). This role presents a unique and exciting opportunity to work in collaboration with leading academics at BCU to apply knowledge and technical innovation to create new solutions that can have a genuine impact in the care sector.

The Role

You will be responsible for leading the design, development, implementation and evaluation of a novel hardware and software decision/behaviour support system capable of collecting and visualising physiological data from young people (based at SHS’ residential care homes) to facilitate the management of emotional behavioural disorders. The system will also require the development of a carer management component where identified patterns of behaviour can help determine the skill sets required by carers supporting young people with specific needs.

This development of this application will involve examining existing software and hardware solutions and developing bespoke solutions in the light of business needs; working collaboratively with carers, service users, and other stakeholders based at SHS to understand their key requirements and then iteratively develop a platform capable of integrating multiple commercial sensors (e.g. for tracking body temperature, sleeping patterns, skin conductance, heart rate, agitation, etc.). The platform will also need to be evaluated closely with SHS service users to explore and understand the effectiveness of the new system.

The ideal candidate will have excellent technical programming and system development and social interaction skills and should be willing to work as part of a tightly knit, innovative group of highly motivated individuals both at SHS and also academics in the DMT Lab. The candidate must also be adept at applying their knowledge to commercial projects, driving value and making an impact where possible, with an ability to solve problems and create innovative solutions.

Essential Skills

Experience of working with and developing systems requiring sensor integration, signal processing, and data visualisation.
Strong programming background in relevant languages (Python, C#, C++, etc.).
Good knowledge of sensor driven systems and other related emerging technologies.
Excellent communication, time management, and problem solving skills – as well as confidence in working closely with caregivers and young people with special needs.
Desirable Skills

Experience in designing, conducting, and analysing user evaluations of systems.
Background in accessibility, assistive technology, and working with people who have some form of disability/impairment.
Wider commercial understanding and awareness.
