Job Purpose:
To develop a road map to quantify the carbon emissions of company
operations and construction services provided in order to track, monitor
and reduce carbon emissions throughout all stages of the construction
process to align with company carbon strategy goals for net zero.

Main Activities / Responsibilities:
This is a unique opportunity for a dynamic and motivated graduate to work
in Felix O’Hare & Co Ltd (based in Newry, Co. Down) on a 24-month
collaborative project with School of Natural & Built Environment at
Queen’s. This will enable the associate to build on their existing
knowledge to be at the forefront of carbon management and best
sustainability practice in the construction industry in Northern Ireland
and the UK. Felix O’ Hare & Co Ltd is one of Ireland’s most

We undertake projects throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of
Ireland. Our primary activity is undertaking large, complex projects in
commercial, retail, education, healthcare, high-tech and institutional
buildings, refurbishment and maintenance works. Felix O’Hare & Co
Ltd offers a full range of construction services including traditional
building arrangements, design & build, and partnering. We constantly

The KTP Associate will lead on the delivery of the following key project
stages under the guidance of company and academic supervisors:
• Establish the policy framework and commercial opportunities for carbon
management in construction.
• Examine the carbon performance of a selected recent company project.
• Develop a policy, targets and a road map to achieve net zero at a
corporate level and for project operations.
• Work with sub-contractors and suppliers to improve information flow on
embodied carbon and prepare commercial offerings on lower carbon
alternatives.
• Trial a new approach to carbon management on an existing/live
project.
• Embed the newly developed carbon awareness and capability into the
company at all relevant levels.
Essential Criteria:
1. Hold, or be about to obtain in July 2022, at least a 2.1 Honours Degree
(or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Quantity Surveying,
Building Services Engineering or a built-environment/construction related
discipline. A candidate with a 2.1 Honours Degree in Environmental
Engineering, Environmental Management or similar with 12 months relevant
experience in the construction sector will also be considered. Candidates
must clearly state their qualifications, grades or predicted grades when
making an application.
2. 3 months’ relevant work experience at site management or project
management level.
3. Knowledge of policies surrounding carbon management*.
4. Knowledge of carbon modelling, accounting, footprinting and knowledge of
the latest best practice within the field.*
5. Demonstrable experience of gathering, collating, processing and
analysing large amounts of data using qualitative and quantitative
analyses.
6. Understanding of the processes and concepts behind BIM modelling.
* = May be demonstrated through the completion of a module, student
project or placement.
7. Ability to think logically, create solutions and make informed
decisions.
8. A high level of numeracy and the ability to interpret data.
9. Demonstrable ability to undertake modelling, calculations, quantitative
and qualitative analysis.
10. Good oral, written and presentation skills.
11. High level of IT skills.
12. Self-motivated, capable of working independently, with a drive and
ambition to suceed.
13. Ability to work effectively as a member of a group.
14. Enthusiam for research/project area.
15. Well organised, attention to detail and ability to meet tight
deadlines.
16. An interest in staying with the Company. (Associates are normally
invited to apply for permanent positions).
17. Ability to take part in Associate management courses (requiring two
one-week periods in England).
18. Willing/able to travel throughout the UK and Ireland and abroad, as
necessary.
Desirable Criteria:
1. Hold, or be about to obtain, a higher degree in a relevant
discipline.
2. Experience in procurement and supply chain management.
3. 12 months’ relevant work experience at site management or project
management level.
4. Practical experience in delivering training or presenting.
5. Experience in the use of Project Management software e.g. MS Project or
similar.
6. Experience of working with relevant environmental or energy management
systems.
7. Experience in the use of carbon calculators.
8. Experience in the use of BIM modelling.
9. Experience of carbon modelling, accounting, footprinting and knowledge
of the latest best practice within the field.
10. Ability to deliver training and follow-up support to operatives.
11. Experience of writing concise technical reports.
12. Ability to influence people effectively.
13. Tenacious and committed to achieving goals.
£25,000 – £32,000 per annum. One of the key KTP benefits for graduates is access to a £7,740 training and travel budget over the 24 month project.
